I love free courses, and with University open learning portals and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) taking off in recent years, we are spoilt for choice! Here are my favourites…

Skillshare is a subscription-based learning site which I feel offers great value for money if you have many interests within the creative industry. There are great resources on there no matter what your creative speciality is including film-making, novel-writing, and even screenwriting! Right now you can learn how to write treatments that sell with Jurgen Wolff, among many other courses by different content creators. Just search “screenwriting” in Skillshare’s search engine and you’ll find a list of over 30 courses related to screenwriting.

Another favourite of mine and a completely free UK-based learning site (unless you want certificates for which you pay a fee). Past courses have included “An Introduction To Screenwriting”, “Visual Effects for Guerilla Filmmakers”, “Film Production”, “Explore Animation”, “Transmedia Storytelling”, “Digital Storytelling” and “Unlocking Film Rights” – all offered by Universities. There’s a course going on right now, called “Explore Filmmaking: From Script to Screen” and there’s an upcoming course on “The Business of Film”, starting on the 12th June.

Coursera is much the same as Futurelearn, but more American-based. There’s a range of courses related to TV, film and gaming. Michigan State University currently have a course on “Script Writing: Write a Pilot Episode for a TV or Web Series” and UNSW Australia have one on “Transmedia Storytelling: Narrative worlds, emerging technologies, and global audiences”.

Falmouth University used to have a great open space for free learning. Back in 2011, their free screenwriting course went viral – it was that good! Sadly, the open space is no longer there, but open space lectures are all available still in this YOUTUBE PLAYLIST.

Another great place to learn and network (though not free) is London Screenwriters’ Festival. Use my special discount code: SOFLUID-17X to get a £23 discount! Buy your tickets HERE.
